The new engine will be a 2.2L clean diesel variation with an SCR after-treatment system, and will power the CX-5 SKYACTIV^®-D SUV. Not many crossover SUVs contain diesel engine options, but they are certainly desired by drivers everywhere. By introducing a new engine inside of a well-appointed utility vehicle, Mazda not only captivates the attention of those seeking better fuel efficiency, but those who also like adventure or want room for their growing family.

Why Clean Diesel?

Receiving top-notch fuel efficiency is important to drivers today, and Mazda wants to recognize this by providing an engine option that generates exceptional fuel efficiency without compromising the power or utility drivers have come to expect from Mazda vehicles. The new model—which will debut in 2017—will feature a new technology built around a system that includes ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and an energy-efficient internal combustion engine with advanced emission control. With all of these changes, drivers can expect a 97% reduction in sulfur, which is traditionally found in diesel fuel.

In addition to reduced sulfur and emissions, the new Mazda clean diesel engine is also expected to generate 30% better fuel efficiency than comparable gasoline models. Plus, diesel engines are known to produce a solid amount of power, which means drivers won’t miss out on any of the features they have come to expect from a Mazda.
